Apples, pears & plums with the possibility of blackberries and quinces.
Thanks to the generousity of the local community we have the opportunity to harvest apples, crab apples, pears and plums in the Black Hill and Eureka areas tomorrow morning starting from 10am.
Where: Meet at the playground on the corner of Peel St and Chisholm St at 10am. We can organise car pooling from here. We anticipate the harvest will take an hour to an hour and a half.
What to bring: sturdy shoes, bags and boxes to take home a share of the fruit.
If you would like to be involved RSVP via email or text 0439 594 093. [Please don’t just turn up!]
The Hidden Orchard Project aims to reduce waste as well as improve the health of trees and the community. Many apple and pear trees in Ballarat are affected by codling moth. Picking and removing damaged fruit helps reduce the pest population and improve future harvests. Damaged fruit may be suitable for animal feed, or possibly used for cider making or cooking with extra preparation. If you would like to take these home please bring extra boxes and bags. If these damaged fruit are not wanted by the volunteer harvesters they will be donated to the Ballarat Wildlife Park and Mt Beckworth Freerange.
If you have any questions please contact Kris via text on 0439 594 093. (Unfortunately she doesn’t have reliable phone reception at home so please contact via text)
