What better way to celebrate the first day of Autumn than to climb a tree and harvest crab apples!
Over 30 kg of these lovely large crabs were harvested in under an hour. The homeowners were very happy to see them go to good homes; half went off to Food is Free Laneway and the rest was shared amongst the harvest volunteers (who doubtless spent the rest of the afternoon chopping the apples and cooking them up as the first step in making apple jelly!)
There will be many more harvests in coming weeks, so please register as a volunteer if you’d like to be involved. We’re also planning a few cook-ups as we know that many people are keen to learn the simple skills of making jams, jellies and similar delights. Watch the website or FB page for more info. The Hidden Orchard is run fully on volunteer energy so if we are sometimes tardy to respond to an email or a new registration, please be patient. Meantime, enjoy the delights of the harvest season (and maybe head over to Ballarat Community Garden for their annual harvest festival this Sunday – it’s always a cracker of a good time!)
